The flourescent lamp came on the lighting scene as the result of a search for greater effeciency and for lamps capable of special applications. A flourescent lamp produces several times more illumination than a incandescent lamp of similar wattage. And the illumination produced also makes colors appear in their natural rendering which is extremely helpful on department stores and other places where color selection is important. The very shape of the flourescent lamp lends itself to many applications, for example recessed lights. Thus, this type lamp enjoys widespread use wherever modern, natural light is required.

A "starter" switch that operates only during the starting period is used with pre-heat start lamps to pre-heat the cathodes before starting. The use of this starter permits more economical ballast designs. Of all flourescent lamps, this is the most economical type with long life, high lumen output and low initial cost.
